DIY Dental: Homemade Toothpaste, Mouthwash, and Oil-Pulling Chews

On top of so many other reasons, Essential Oils are incredibly beneficial for our teeth and gums. I wanted to try making my own oral care products recently and have loved using them so far. I was paying about $5-7 per tube for my favorite toothpastes and decided that I might as well just make my own, considering the fact that a. I could, and b. it's less additives even though the packages on them say they're all natural, you can't go wrong with DIY to be on the extra-safe side.

Have you ever oil-pulled? If not, give it a try! It's nature's fluoride. It strengthens your gums, jaws, prevents gum disease, inflammation, heart disease, tooth decay, acne, cavities, gingivitis, and bad breath. It also helps alleviate dryness of your lips, mouth, and throat too. Plus it helps to whiten your teeth too. It's actually been proven to be more effective than flossing, can you believe that? If you're a "normal" dentist I bet you will say no, and no offense, but I'm not going to come into your office and spend a ton of money for chemicals ingestion and absorption.

By the way, do you know just how toxic fluoride is? It's a xenobiotic - a poison - not a nutrient. Our body doesn't recognize xenobiotics when it comes into contact with these synthetic chemicals. The FDA requires a poison warning on all fluoride toothpastes sold in the states. Millions of people in China and India have developed seriously crippling diseases in their bones from drinking water with high levels of fluoride. It's more toxic than lead, and just a little less toxic than arsenic, which is why it's been used for pest and rat control. So..... why would we think this is a good idea to ingest? Just because we don't "swallow it" doesn't mean it isn't being absorbed into our bodies. What's absorbed through our mouths goes directly into our bloodstream - think about when people take medicines under their tongues. Research the harms of fluoride, especially in children, and what it does to adults when our bodies have had exposure to it over a long period of time. You will stop consuming it.

It's important to completely avoid fluoride, so I decide to oil pull instead. It removes bacteria and detoxifies the mouth in a similar way that soap cleans your dishes. It's an old Ayurvedic method that's been used for centuries! You can do it with olive or sesame oil, but I just love coconut oil. And with the oral benefits of essential oils, I add those in too.

I decided to make my own little "chews" for when I want to oil pull, which I do every evening when I shower.

Put a tbsp of coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around for about 15-20 minutes, just as you would with fluoride, but for longer.
